There is a strong connection between horse and human. Anyone who has spent time with them understands this special connection.
Horses age, and their parts wear out, just like all living creatures. So what happens to horses once they are too old, to perform their job?
For some, they are lucky enough to have an owner who has a large pasture where they can retire, but with ever decreasing land available, most horses are housed in a boarding stable, which can get expensive. Some owners simply cannot afford to keep their aging horse. They try to find a home for their aging companion, which can be very difficult to find for an aging horse. The owner might find themselves in a tough situation trying to figure out what to do with their aging horse, and wanting what is best for him or her, but not having the financial means to provide for their horse.
Help us Save Our Seniors. They deserve a happy retirement!

Horses have a fairly long life span. If they outlive their human companion, what happens to them? Where do they go? These horses can find themselves in a neglected, abusive environment, helpless and desperate for help.
Unfortunately, aging horses can find themselves in a bad situation once they have outlived their usefulness. And, after spending years working and taking care of their humans it is not always an ill intended owner who is the cause of an aging horse’s suffering or neglect. Some owners will take their horses to an auction for a quick sale. While some horses may find a good home through an auction, other horses will be purchased for slaughter. If they are unlucky enough to get caught in the slaughter pipeline, they will often starve and/or die before arriving in Mexico or Canada to be slaughtered. We find that to be a horrendous end for a beautiful creature who has spent their life taking care of their owners, and even their owners children.
It is for this reason that we formed Almost Heaven Horse Sanctuary. Our mission is to provide a place of happiness, peace and comfort for these amazing animals who spent their years serving and bonding with humans in the roles that we have asked them to perform.
